Motorbike frog

Motorbike frogs are one of the frog species you’re most likely to encounter in south west WA (from Geraldton south to Albany), partly because they’re quite common & partly because they’re hard to miss given how big they are (up to ~8cm). Their dorsal, or back, colouration & patterning is quite variable, & they often have beautiful gold patches after basking in sunlight. They live near permanent waterbodies including swamps, lakes, farm dams, garden ponds (build one & they almost certainly will come!) & streams with vegetation cover along the edges. They breed from early spring right through into summer, with females laying large clutches of eggs that hatch into free-swimming tadpoles. The tadpoles usually reach about 8cm total length & metamorphose into froglets by mid-autumn, but sometimes (when they were laid late in the season &/or the water they’re living in is relatively cool) they’ll ‘overwinter’ in the waterbody and then spend another spring & summer growing before they finally metamorphose at ~14 months old – they can be up to 14cm long at that point!!
